The Deep Cuts
I filled this playlist with some songs I’ve been cycling through this fall or songs I usually find myself coming back to in the fall. It’s full of songs I love to listen to while I’m walking around the city and there’s just a bit of a chill in the air.
The first part of the playlist is mostly rock and indie rock, both old and new. I grew up listening to a lot of these songs, but I also added a bunch of songs I’ve just recently found or I’ve been in love with for a couple of years. My parents also listen to a lot of music, so I grew up with artists like Liz Phair, Fiona Apple, The Cranberries, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Alvvays, Sam Fender, and Tamino are some artists I’ve really been digging recently and would kill to see live.
The last little section of the playlist transitions into a few of my favorite jazz songs – ones that I think are particularly suited for fall!
Three Favorite Albums
The Smashing Pumpkins – Gish
Alvvays – Blue Rev
Sam Fender – Seventeen Going Under
Favorite Concert Experience
It’s difficult to pick, but one particular concert stands out above the rest for me. I saw one of my favorite bands in the world – Inhaler – back in March at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The venue was just perfect. It was more of an intimate show than I’d been expecting.
My SCOPE friend Jackie and I drove up in the morning and then waited on the street in line all afternoon. I met a bunch of amazing people just waiting in line, so the time flew by. When we got into the venue, we ended up being about a row behind barricade – the closest I’ve probably ever been at a concert. I had a perfect view of everything. I was freaking out. I screamed a lot. I have so many videos. If you ask me about it, I’ll talk your ear off, guaranteed.
Eli’s voice was just so amazing life – like otherworldly amazing. Dublin in Ecstasy was easily one of the best songs I’ve ever heard live. A girl near us also passed out a bunch of paper hearts, and we held them up when they sang their song Valentine. The band was kind of blown away by it, I think.
I also waited outside after the venue with a group of girls to see if we could catch the band while they were leaving and ended up seeing Eli and Ryan drive out! They had their windows rolled down and were waving at us and thanking us for coming to the show. Definitely an experience I’ll never forget in my entire life.
Hobbies / Interests / Fun Facts / Campus Involvement
Most of my free time is filled with music!! I play a few instruments – piano, saxophone, and guitar – and I sing as well. I also like to write my own music – I have this crazy journal filled with chicken scratch lyrics – which is, to me, a perfect blend of my many interests with writing and music.
I’m also involved in the jazz program here on campus – I’ve played saxophone in both big band and small combo groups now. You can find me gigging around occasionally with my jazz-funk band, YesterNite.
Aside from that, I’m an avid reader and writer. On any given day, you can probably find me in a coffee shop downtown, deep into my writing or a good book.
