What better way to finish off the first week back than a lively SCOPE Selects by our one and only, Emma Bohn? Take a dive into her time here at Iowa as she prepares for graduation and listen to a wonderfully curated playlist full of memories old and new!

Name: Emma Bohn (she/her)
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA
Year: Senior
Field of Study: Political Science
SCOPE Position: GenCom

Heyoo!!! I’m Emma Bohn and I’m a resident fourth-year GenCom member here in SCOPE Productions. SCOPE has been by me through all of the ups and downs of my extremely non-linear college career and I couldn’t be more grateful for all the friends I’ve made along the way. This playlist is a little bizarre, combining some of my recent favorites (especially coming freshly off SXSW), some sentimental classics, a few comedic mentions, my all-time go-to's, but truly encompasses me, Emma Bohn, at this moment in time (March 2022, down bad with a case of strep throat).

Three Favorite Albums:

  • 19 by Adele
  • Young the Giant by Young the Giant
  • Watch the Throne by Jay-Z & Kanye West

Favorite Concert Experience:

Dolly Parton in Austin, Texas. Last week I had the pleasure of spending my spring break with a dozen other scopers at South By Southwest in Austin. We saw a year’s worth of cool concerts in the span of a week in a setting unlike any other. While I loved seeing Wet Leg, Jade Bird, Claud, and so many others, Dolly herself was such a treat. We laughed, we cried, we sang our hearts out to 9 to 5. It was bliss. Dolly was most definitely my favorite concert I’ve ever attended, but I’ll never forget what an incredible experience it was to work my first ever Homecoming here at Iowa when Lizzo was performing. Doe-eyed and severely lacking any ability to coil - which, I still need some help on - I stood backstage with my best friend and older brother, watching in awe as Lizzo tore up the flute.

Hobbies/Interests/Fun Facts/Campus Involvement: When I’m not in class or hanging out with my friends, you can bank on finding me at work. For the past year, I’ve worked at Brix, a wine bar on the Northside of Iowa City, and have fallen in love with it! After these four years, bouncing from major to major - honorable mention to my experience with Environmental Engineering and Math - and hobby to hobby, like baseball statistics or synchronized swimming, I’ve found a happy little niche with cool, smart people, many of which share my love for music. I’ve dabbled in a little bit of political involvement, mostly during caucus season, and used to be in a sorority on campus. I love puzzles, sudoku, gossiping, and my sweet baby cat, Kitty.

The Deep Cuts:

This playlist is nothing short of a hodgepodge. As much time as I spend listening to and talking about music, I frequently find myself at a loss when asked about my favorites. I’ll most frequently bounce between a classic indie-sad-girl wave (ie; Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Waxahatchee, Snail Mail) and the mid-2010s indie/folk/pop/rock sound (Young the Giant, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, LCD Soundsystem, Father John Misty). Making this playlist was a tad difficult for me, as I’m not as much of a playlist person, but more of a “binge one album until I’m sick of it” person, and almost always let Spotify choose for me. They were really onto something with those mixes and radios. Some of my music is extremely embarrassing. My favorite embarrassing music story comes from 2019 when I listened to Do You Believe In Magic by The Loving Spoonful over a thousand times; it was the only thing I could bear to listen to while studying matrix algebra, and only two minutes long! You can find it at the end of my playlist. I think the most shameful and embarrassing thing about my music taste is one thing: Kanye West. As I’m sure you saw, his album with Jay-Z will go down in history as being one of my favorites. I can’t explain it, I don’t like him as a person, and I don’t like it about myself, but there’s something so profound about the first 38 seconds of Runaway, off My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I’ll always have a deep appreciation for the music that reminds me of home, like 99 Luftballons by Nena, Linger by the Cranberries, and one of my all-time favorites, Wide Open Spaces by The Chicks. In the same way, some of my most cherished music reminds me of my older brothers and our old car rides to school, which is why you’ll find Drake and Red Hot Chili Peppers side to side. So please take a deep dive into my good, my bad, my embarrassing, and my emotional picks. I hope you won’t judge too hard. Have fun! :)
