The Deep Cuts

The common thread of this playlist to me is coming of age. Or coming of human? I chose songs that convey the mixed emotions that are experienced through navigating one’s own humanness as a young adult in the 2020’s. Sometimes we dance, sometimes we cry, we mess up, we win big, and sometimes we just sit there.

Songs personal to my coming of age are included. Beija Eu by Marisa Monte is a favorite my dad shared with me as a child. I do not know Portuguese, but I always sing along. Shut up and Let Me Go from The Ting Tings reminds me of dance parties in my room, and discovering my own musical taste in elementary school. The Chromatics cover of I’m on Fire reminds me of moodier teenager days and wanting to be as cool as my older cousin. Glen Campbell’s Gentle on my Mind and Amy Winehouse’s Tear’s Dry on Their Own were played by mom in the car on drives we went on just to get out of the house.

Everytime I see a turnstile I hear Jordana and TV Girl’s Jump the Turnstile. My most played song of 2022 was Arthur’s Woof Woof. The poetic lyrics of these songs are paired with synths creating a youthful energy while honestly honoring the experience of insecurity. FM by Packs was my anthem this summer. The simplicity of the track gives it power, and is a revelation rather than a performance. Father Time by Kendrick Lamar was also a favorite of the summer. Here’s to all of us trying our best to carry ourselves (past, hopes and all) with no chaser.

Three Favorite Albums

  • Glow by Alice Phoebe Lou
  • WOAH by Packs
  • Lioness: Hidden Treasures by Amy Winehouse

Favorite Concert Experience

A few years ago my dad and I saw Fleetwood Mac play in Des Moines. As a child my dad would play the live recording of The Dance, and in high school I was an intense fan of Fleetwood Mac. I loved following the evolution of the band with Peter Green and the Mcvie’s to the addition of Stevie Nicks. Seeing Fleetwood Mac with my dad was really special because my dad and I always shared a love of music and writing. Niel Finn from Crowded House filled in for Lindsey Buckingham for the tour, and they performed Don’t Dream it’s Over, it was an unexpected super lovely surprise.

Hobbies / Interests / Fun Facts / Campus Involvement

In my free time I upcycle clothing, and currently I am working with the organization the Wright House of Fashion to elevate underrepresented designers. This past fall I worked with others to organize a flea market. Just sitting outside, especially on roofs, is a big enjoyment and something I am trying to do more these days. I help out with backpacking, hiking, and camping classes with the university during the warmer months. I like to write music, and am learning more about being an artist. I love my friends!!!
