Sierra Ferrell brought her “Heavy Petal Tour” to Hancher Greens on Aug. 28, turning the University of Iowa campus into a night of music, dancing and colorful celebration.

Ferrell took the stage at 8:30 p.m. in front of an estimated 7,500 attendees gathered across the lawn. The crowd arrived dressed for the occasion, with flower crowns, floral shirts, capes and flower-covered jackets filling the green of the tour’s theme.

The evening began with DJ Crimson Mask, a vinyl DJ who warmed up the crowd before the program continued with remarks from the Executive Director of Hancher Auditorium, Andre Perry, and University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson. The Hawkeye Marching Band also took part in the evening’s festivities.

Food trucks lined the lawn as attendees filled the space ahead of Ferrell’s performances. As the evening continued, the crowd danced and twirled across the grass, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Ferrell’s performance was what felt like a magical end of the summer in Iowa City, bringing thousands of students and community members together through live music and shared celebration of the arts.
