The Deep Cuts
I’ve tried my best to put together a comprehensive mix of my favorite songs, from my favorite genres, and from my favorite artists — both old and new, but it’s nearly impossible. “Rude Boy” was the first song (and music video) that made my love for music click. Its spot on this playlist (along with all the songs from the late-’90s and early 2000s) is for that moment, and to my Tantine Joelle who made it happen.
About 90% of the songs here make you move, in one way or another because I like my music loud. Amaarae shows up twice, because she gets it. Yves Tumor shows up twice because they get it. If I were able to make music, those are the two artists that I could only wish to be like. There are quiet songs too. “Close to You” by Frank Ocean is my favorite song by him. Just warped, fragile, and perfectly blurry.
Going into my fourth year in SCOPE, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve created SCOPE Selects playlists over-and-over again. I don’t know if I did the best job at it, but I hope it finds you somewhere good.
Three Favorite Albums
Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume by Yves Tumor
channel ORANGE by Frank Ocean
Renaissance by Beyoncé
Favorite Concert Experience
I went to Lollapalooza two years ago and I need to go back. We saw Kendrick Lamar, The Garden, Magdalena Bay (pre-Homecoming), and almost got destroyed by two Destroy Lonely moshpits.
Rina Sawayama was my favorite performer of the entire festival. There was dancing, storyline, outfit changes, I mean c’mon. She didn’t play much from Sawayama, and most sadly “Tokyo Love Hotel” which was a bummer as that was my quarantine album/song, but it was perfect nonetheless.
Hobbies / Interests / Fun Facts / Campus Involvement
Apart from SCOPE, I’m a member of Students For Human Rights (S.H.R.A.I.) on campus. I enjoy yoga, reading, watching movies, tweeting from the void, and learning fun facts from my favorite podcasts: You’re Wrong About and Celebrity Memoir Book Club. I’m a barista at Daydrink and have finally gotten somewhat solid at latte art. I’m also an avid player of 2048, where I’ve consistently (but unsuccessfully) tried to beat my high score of 132,600.
