The Deep Cuts

Ranging from Stevie Wonder to Lady Gaga, this playlist interweaves R&B, funk, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music. Whether they play through my headphones or blast through a speaker, I appreciate the intricate production of these songs.

I adore music that shows admiration for the music of others, which is why several songs on this playlist use samples, interpolations, covers, or remixes of other music.  Some of my favorite examples of this on the playlist include “All Night” by Beyonce, which samples “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” by OutKast, and “American Teenager” by Ethel Cain, which interpolates “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. I also included songs where artists incorporate their previous work, like Lana Del Rey’s sampling of “Venice Bitch” in “Taco Truck x VB.”

This playlist also contains many tracks I love to listen to while I’m dancing. One of my all-time favorites is the funky disco track “I Wanna Be Your Lover” by Prince. With its groovy synthesizers and intoxicating vocals, that song never fails to make me want to move. Other honorable mentions include “Immaterial” by SOPHIE, “One More Time” by Daft Punk, and “She’s a Bad Mama Jama (She’s Built, She’s Stacked)” by Carl Carlton.

In addition to the upbeat dance music on this playlist, I included a selection of the less danceable but equally satisfying songs I enjoy, such as “Something” by The Beatles, “Mercy Mercy Me” by Marvin Gaye, and “Across the Universe” by Fiona Apple.

Three Favorite Albums

Melodrama by Lorde

folklore by Taylor Swift

ANTI by Rihanna

Favorite Concert Experience

Lorde’s Solar Power Tour in Chicago. 10/10. Best night of my life. Lorde performed a perfect mixture of tracks from Pure Heroine, Melodrama, and Solar Power. Not a single person in the crowd stood still. My favorite part of the night was when she played “Writer in the Dark” for the first time in four years. In combination with the smaller theater venue, the volume of the crowd made the moment spiritual. I left that concert with an even deeper love for Lorde and live music.

Hobbies / Interests / Fun Facts / Campus Involvement

Usually, I like to spend my time being super Cool and Fun. This mainly consists of completing the NYT Mini Crossword, Wordle, and the Countries of the World quiz. My biggest ambition in life is to go on Jeopardy. I also enjoy traveling and long walks on the beach.

Fun fact: I am only four awards away from an EGOT!
