Favorite concert experience

I guess the most recent big concert I’ve been to was Phoebe Bridgers - I drove to Kansas City with Joey O’Kelly, the GM himself at the end of this past May. I haven’t been in any big outdoor venues before, so the Starlight Theatre blew me away; it had been pouring rain all day, but there was a big enough break in the storm for the show to still go on. I knew when Phoebe and her band walked onstage in matching skeleton costumes to “Down With The Sickness” that the show was gonna shred, and it did - she brought opener Charlie Hickey back on to sing “Chinese Satellite” after explaining the meaning behind the song, and I shed a tear or two after hearing it with newfound context. I screamed my throat raw when she closed the show with “I Know The End”, and kept screaming when she came back to play her encore solo - “Waiting Room”, my personal favorite of hers, pulled out of retirement for the reception it got from her fans. If I could relive the full-body rush I got when I recognized the encore from the first few guitar chords, I would.

Hobbies / Interests / Fun Facts / Campus Involvement

I spend most of my time outside of school and SCOPE pretending to be a big kid as an undergraduate research assistant for the university’s Biomedical Engineering department - I’ve spent the better part of the last six months in the Worthington Lab, researching and testing ways to optimize corneal transplant surgery for both patients and surgical techs. When I’m not channeling my inner Big Hero 6, I’m probably playing mellophone for the Hawkeye Marching Band, playing shows in Illinois as mars hojilla, or selling merch for my girlfriend’s band, emily the band.
