This week in our SCOPE Selects series, we will be introducing our Assistant General Manager, Maggie Odegaard. Maggie's playlist is great for introspection and reminiscing on the past, especially if you are going through any major life changes right now. Take a look at this week's SCOPE Selects!

Name: Maggie Odegaard (she/her)
Hometown: Granger, Iowa
Year: Senior
Field(s) of Study: Journalism and Mass Communication, Arts Entrepreneurship, and Event Management
SCOPE Position: Assistant General Manager

Hi!! My name is Maggie Odegaard and I am this year’s Assistant General Manager.

This is my third year in SCOPE. I was the Marketing Director last year, which challenged me because my role faced a lot of change in light of COVID, as did SCOPE in general. I am so ecstatic to be back in person, this year, putting on music for all of Iowa City to enjoy.

My role as the Assistant General Manager focuses on educational opportunities for SCOPE members, as well as organizational tasks (which I love), and communications with collaborators (such as the Englert Theatre!) I love that in this role I get to help directors and general committee members accomplish their goals in SCOPE and have a direct say in the leadership and direction of SCOPE.

Three Favorite Albums: Women in Music Pt. III // HAIM, Swimmer // Tennis, Modern Vampires of the City // Vampire Weekend

Favorite Concert Experience: I saw The 1975 at First Avenue in Minneapolis when I was 15. It was one of the last small shows they played, and tickets were nearly impossible to snag. The band was about to blow up, and they had just released a few singles off their second album. I fell in love with the venue and made some great concert buddies waiting in line in the frigid cold, that is, December in Minnesota (I wore a skirt, bad move.) They played “Somebody Else” live. It wasn’t released at the time, and I remember thinking, “Wow, that song was fucking good.” I was just 15, and that was the first real concert that gave me the passion I have for live music. I’ll never forget it.

Hobbies & Interests: I love to cook and bake! I got really into cooking when the pandemic hit, and I love planning what I am going to make each week. I have recently gotten back into reading, which is my ideal form of escapism. Two of my favorite books are “Normal People” by Sally Rooney and “Sharp Objects” by Gillian Flynn. I also really enjoy traveling and hope to work abroad after graduation. Also, I have an insane love for clothes and wholeheartedly believe in the power of retail therapy.

The Deep Cuts

A look into my playlist: My SCOPE Selects playlist is a mix of songs I love right now, songs I’ve loved forever, songs that make me feel good, and songs that give me comfort like nothing else can. Recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith and have been obsessed with Adrianne Lenker’s album, “songs.” I think I’m drawn to this music because I am going through a lot of big life changes right now. I have a lot of choices to make in the near future and this music lets me lean into those thoughts. I find these songs cathartic, and also nostalgic; however, the playlist also includes some of my all-time favorite artists, and songs I just put on there for the hell of it. I hope you enjoy! ☺
