Happy Thursday, or should I say, Happy SCOPE Selects Thursday! Today, we have Joe! Joe is a fun and funky jazz guitarist and General Committee member with some tunes up his sleeve.

Name: Joe Shanks
Hometown: Ankeny, IA
Year: 2nd
Field(s) of Study: Jazz Guitar and Electrical Engineering
SCOPE Position: Gen Comm

Three Favorite Albums:

  • I'm Wide Awake It's Morning by Bright Eyes
  • Undercurrent by Bill Evans and Jim Hall
  • Fate by Dr. Dog

Favorite Concert Experience:

I saw one of my favorite bands, (if not my favorite), Dr. Dog, like two weeks ago and it was sick. It was their farewell tour so I will probably never see them again. A guy told me he was twice my age and got into that band when he was my age, so he was happy to see my friends and me so excited.

Hobbies/Interests/Fun Facts/Campus Involvement:

I am in SCOPE as is hopefully clear. I do jazz guitar and also cook and read and grow plants -- lots and lots of plants. I am in a club called Engineers in Action in Iowa where engineering students help with bridge-building projects around the world. This summer the group will be traveling to Eswatini for 6 weeks and I couldn't be more excited.
The first track on Joe's playlist is "Intro (My Name Is Joe)" by the artist, Joe. He even adds another fun "Joe track" from Car Seat Headrest. Although they are not as fabulously Joe. . . there are other non-Joe-related songs that you have got to check out on this playlist!

The Deep Cuts:

Listen to the playlist, I dare you. I'm not sure what's going on, but I added a bunch of stuff I like from Spotify so that's where we're at. I like shitty jazz and bossa nova and noisy stuff. Also, sad stuff and basic-bitch alternative. Also, Audrey Hepburn. That woman can do anything she wants to me. Also, Otis Redding good lord. Hopefully, if anyone listens to my playlist they'll at least find a couple of new things that they'll like.
