The Mountain Goats first formed in Claremont, California in an employee-housing studio apartment by singer-songwriter John Darnielle. It all began on a dual cassette recorder, where Darnielle would set his poems to music and would play a guitar he had picked up for a few dollars at a nearby music store. Since 1991, Darnielle has written around 600 beautiful and unnerving songs. SCOPE Productions is bringing him to the beautiful and historic First United Methodist Church, which features intricate stained glass windows and a gorgeous, intimate acoustic environment.
Julianna Barwick's art is equal parts force and beauty. Her music finds its motor in significant events in her own life, but they are abstracted into a sense of sonic wonderment, a radiance that you could say is her signature sound. That radiance has been taken to new zeniths with Nepenthe, her third full-length album, which was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland, in the dark cold days of February.
Formerly of indie bands Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, Spencer Krug’s latest band, Moonface, is making his way to The Mill this winter. Moonface’s mysterious and self-reflexive persona was crafted as an outlet for his dark pop and melodious experiments. The album on tour is “Julia With the Blue Jeans On”, and it portrays themes of raw human emotion driven by love and intimacy. The album consists primarily of voice and piano, revealing the beautiful classical undertones created by Moonface in tracks like “Love The House You’re In”.
SCOPE Productions and Mission Creek Festival have partnered to present Spanish dance group, DELOREAN at The Mill. Tickets can be purchased at The Hub in the IMU or on ticketmaster.com
